Membership Benefits & Fair Market Value (FMV) Policy
his policy establishes how Playmakers Nashville defines, evaluates, and discloses the fair market value (FMV) of benefits associated with membership. The purpose is to ensure compliance with Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regulations governing charitable contributions, quid pro quo disclosures, and tax deductibility for donors and members.
This is first-year introductory pricing.
IRS Framework & Guiding Principles
Under IRS guidance, a member’s payment to a 501(c)(3) organization is tax-deductible only to the extent that the payment exceeds the fair market value of goods or services received in return.
For purposes of this policy:
Fair Market Value (FMV) is defined as the price a willing buyer would pay a willing seller for a good or service in an arm’s-length transaction.
Intangible, mission-aligned, educational, and community-based benefits do not carry determinable FMV and therefore do not reduce the tax-deductible portion of a membership payment.
Only tangible goods or benefits with a clear retail or market value are assigned FMV.
Playmakers Nashville applies a conservative FMV methodology to protect both the organization and its members.
Benefits with No Assigned FMV ($0)
The following benefits are considered intangible, mission-aligned, or non-transferable and therefore do not have a determinable fair market value:
Access to the Playmakers Nashville member community
In-person personal and professional development opportunities, including cohort-specific and all-cohort learning experiences
Online professional development resources
Informal or “come as you are” social and community-building events
Eligibility to apply for scholarships (undergraduate and graduate)
Scholarships are awarded through a separate application and review process and are not guaranteed
Mentorship community participation (optional and non-guaranteed)
Community impact, volunteer, and philanthropic engagement opportunities
Access to job and internship postings or referrals
No placement or employment is guaranteed
These benefits support Playmakers Nashville’s charitable mission and do not represent goods or services with a standalone retail value.
Benefits with Assigned FMV
The following benefit is considered a tangible good and therefore carries fair market value:

A small branded or non-branded item provided to members
FMV is assigned based on actual cost or a conservative retail estimate
